The Growing Importance of ATATURK

Without a doubt, ATATURK, the founder of Modern & Secular Turkish Republic, is a uniquely great leader and statesman...!

According to John F. Kennedy, he was “one of the greatest figures of our century.” Winston Churchill called him “a great hero,” and former French President Charles de Gaulle said, “He was the greatest achiever among all the world leaders, because he modernized his nation”. The great man is Ataturk, the idol of the Turks. His original name is Mustafa Kemal, but in 1934 his constituents gave him the name Ataturk, which means, “Father of the Turks.” He was the first president of the Republic of Turkey, and without his reforms and leadership, Turkey would not be what it is today. His endeavor was to modernize Turkish life; he wanted to give his nation happiness, better life standards and equality. In his view, modernization of the nation and the state could become real by replacing Arab alphabet with Latin alphabet, giving women the right to vote and participate in the congress, and abolishing the Ottoman Empire’s sovereignty with a secular government and a contemporary constitution.

Truly great men are like good wine. Their influence on the World gets better with time. So was it with Atatürk.

All the isms that started after World War I, such as German National Socialism and Italian Fascism, disappeared after World War II. We had to wait until1989 to see communism crumble.

During all this time, from post-WWI ideas only the principles of Atatürk survived. The Western press was dazzled by the splendor of Hitler's and Mussolini's ceremonies, until WWII revealed their true nature. The West was also fooled by the promises of communism until the huge Soviet Union disintegrated from its own inefficiency. Only Atatürk's ideas and his Turkish Republic survived until today.

Atatürk's secularism became the foremost opponent of political Islam.

Buket Sahin is a freelance writer and photographer based in New York & Istanbul. Her articles, photographs and interviews has appeared in a wide range of publications.

Her more than 10-year professional finance background on Wall Street gained her an in-depth understanding of economics in human behavior.

Exploring 43 countries in 5 continents, wandering its back streets,  she became obsessed in Street Photography as a true lover of compassion & people!

She believes that "Street Photography" is somewhat of a misnomer as it can be practiced anywhere people are photographed in the environment in which they are found, meaning being a photographer is as much a state of mind.

Today, Sahin devotes a great deal of time to travel writing and photography. She is as versatile with a camera as she is with a notepad and pencil.

Buket’s romance with photography began more than a quarter-century ago when she attended a course at IFSAK (Istanbul Professional Photographers Association) while she was a high school student...
